Sarah and Winchester Massey

This photo was taken in Denver, Colorado by Horace E. Hunt .  So close to home, and yet I had never heard my Grandparents talk about Grandpa having extended family in Colorado.

The back says "Sarah and Winchester Massey.  Sarah is half sister to William Wood."

I believe that Sarah would have been the daughter of Israel with his first wife Elizabeth Jones.  They were married on February 6, 1838 according to the Indiana State Library's Marriages through 1850 database.

A quick check on Ancestry indicates that both Sarah and Winchester died in Littleton, Arapahoe County, in the early 1900's--Sarah in 1907 and Winchester in 1911.  Since they are actually very distantly related I haven't verified this.  Ancestry does not list any children for them.

  1. Lucile, do you have a date on this photo? If not, do you have any guess on when it might have been taken? I believe it was taken by my ancestor (Horace E. Hunt) and I'm trying to get the period he was in Colorado nailed down. I *believe* he was there 1884-1890 prior to moving to California.

    1. Good luck on your search, I can offer only a little basic information. We believe that Massey's came to Colorado between 1862 and 1866 but no one I have found knows for sure. I identified the children in the picture as a later post (Mar. 17 2012--currently the latest post). Based on their dates of birth (he two youngest boys were born in 1878 and 1881)I am guessing that the boys are about 8 and 10 or younger. The boys died in Mar. 1919 one day apart so I am sure that the photo is prior to 1919. In fact the absence of their other children makes me think that it was prior to 1892 when the first of the absent children was married. The daughter was born in 1858 (the oldest child) but I have no evidence that she ever married.

My guess is that this photo was taken before 1890--just simply because the youngest child (middle) looks to be less than 9 years old.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  3. Thanks Lucile! The info you've provided lines up well with what I already know about Horace. Oddly, I've found lots of the photos he took, but none of him. :)
Horace was born in 1858 in England. Professionally, he was a photographer, and he took this style of photograph in the different photography studios he opened.
Some time before 1881 he decided to open an Inn. It appears he didn't do very well at that, because in 1885 he went bankrupt and fled to the United States.

I've had a lot of luck tracking him and his family from these photos and the dates noted on the backs of them by the original subjects. Based on my communications with folks who have these photos, I've discovered that he was in Denver until at least 1894, and moved to Crockett, California some time around 1897.

Photographs such as yours, though, are helping me to piece together his private life based on his professional life. Thank you so much for sharing!

  4. You are Welcome. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our ancestors had tried to leave clues and documents behind for us? I am trying to remember to do that for my descendants.
